Pembrokeshire Inland

Online Catalogue |  Pembrokeshire Inland

The Pembrokeshire landscape is a subtle mix of gently rolling farmland in the south of the county, the Preseli Mountains and numerous scattered rocky peaks to the north, meandering rivers and the Cleddau Estuary. Besides the oil industry centred around the Milford Haven waterway - one of the deepest natural harbours in the world - Pembrokeshire has remained wonderfully unscathed by heavy industry.

Starlings
Starlings

The birds. Thank god for the birds. Came past at just the right moment. Mind, I had been watching them for ages moving around the field in flock formation landing here and there. But always just too far away to work. Then as I was about to give up hope they performed a stunning fly-by right in front of the camera. I salute them.

Abandoned Farm, Tafarn-y-bwlch, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

This image perfectly encsapsulates what I want to portray in my work and indeed is the sort of photograph I love to take. Towering over the farm are the Preseli hills shrouded in mist and looking rather foreboding. The fabric of the farm is just beginning to deteriorate - slates missing from the roof, windows falling apart - and the house and outbuildings look vulnerable and desolate. This is a picture of a once active farm in the early throes of decay.

A very popular gentleman and not just with the ladies! This is the second edition of this image with a different duotone to the first which sold out.

Treleddyd Fawr, Near St Davids, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

As a self-confessed architectural history junkie finding this gem was truly exhilirating. Owned and lived in by Mr Griffiths, this cottage in the Pembrokeshire vernacular style is a piece of living history. It has stood for about two hundred years and the only major difference between when it was built and now is that it has electricity. Everything else is as original and it's beautiful.

I love the dappled light hitting the exterior of this most handsome of buildings. The menacing stormy sky soon delivered a hearty downpour that had me packing up pretty quickly.

This is all about the shapes and the atmosphere given to the image by the mist and snow. I like the way the buildings appear tethered to the central telegraph pole.

The Foot of Foel Drygarn, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

Driving around looking for inspiration (an occupational hazard in my game) I came across this flock penned in near the foot of Foel Drygarn waiting to be inoculated. It helped having a bunch nearest me who were inquisitive and obviously not in the least bit camera-shy. Getting them to sign a model-release form would have been a bit tricky though!

Early mornings by the river are truly magical. There was a bit of a hazy mist this day which has diffused the sun's strength and lent the image an eerie feel.

The deep blacks of the silhouetted cows and their shadows stand out against the soft tones of the trees shrouded in early morning mist.

Towards Carn Ingli, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

Just as you drive over the highest point of the Preselis and drop down the other side you get this wonderful view towards Carn Ingli, Newport and the sea. I've used a medium length lens to compress the perspective and accentuate the intersecting layers of land leading to the sea. And that huge perfectly formed cloud was a real bonus.

Camrose, near Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

A howling gale and slow shutter speed produce lots of movement in the trees and sky while the derelict cottage remains sharp. The iron gate lying on the ground has a certain poignancy - the fence it once stood in has long gone.
