Black and White Coast

Pembrokeshire boasts the only coastal national park in Britain. You only have to visit Pembrokeshire to see why it has been awarded such an accolade. From St Dogmaels in the north down to Amroth in the south you can walk a 186 mile long path that takes you along the top of rugged cliffs, across wonderful sandy beaches and through picturesque coastal villages.

Porthgain, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

The small picturesque harbour of Porthgain was once a major exporter of slate and other such materials to all corners of the world. The slate was extracted from what is now the 'Blue Lagoon' at Abereiddi and transported over the headland to specially built hoppers and chutes at Porthgain where it was loaded onto ships.

This image, to me, encapsulates what black and white photography is all about - light and shade, shape and form. In north Pembrokeshire a couple of miles from Abereiddi lives John Knapp Fisher, an artist, and this photograph has been likened to some of his paintings which I consider an enormous compliment as I adore his work. Taken late afternoon on the blackest of Winter day's the sun hadn't appeared all the time I'd been out. Fed up, I was packing my gear into the car when suddenly I saw shadows cast across the carpark - the sun was out. And amongst the illuminated gloom I spotted these white pine-ends lit up - couldn't resist. Set the camera up quick smart and grabbed this shot before the sun disappeared once again.

A rare opportunity to capture a truly black storm brewing. The sun was dipping behind the darkest of clouds while a sheet of rain drenches St Davids Head to the right. A subject such as this, with its limited range of tones, works perfectly in black and white.

I used quite a long lens on this shot to compress the receding cliffs. The image is topped off with that lovely late afternoon wispy sky.

This has to be one of my favourite beaches in Pembrokeshire. And the time I like to visit is winter as it gets all the heavy weather coming in from the Irish Sea. On this particular day I almost had to stake myself down to stop me being blown away.

Another one of those situations where I bagged the shot only to be drenched minutes later. If you happen to be in Little Haven you can see a collection of my framed work in The Swan.

I took this photo as the tree on the cliff-top reminds me of a tree in the beautiful mountain-top village of Ravello just south of Naples in Italy. Anna and I were married in Amalfi and Ravello was just a few nervous miles up a death defying mountain road. From Ravello you look down what seems like miles to the sea below and there's this tree just a few yards down from your vantage point. If you've seen it you'll know what I mean.

Although Pembrokeshire has a coastal National Park and is predominantly a rural farming economy there is some heavy industry especially centred around the Milford Haven waterway.
